How important are sex scenes when writing a book?

Does it depend on how strong the feelings are for the characters and if it will have an affect on their relationship/what happens in the book in the future? Is it important to show how characters feel physically and emotionally for each other? Especially teenagers?
By the way, it is a romance for young adults :)

I think they're only necessary if they're essential to character development within the narrative. Otherwise it's just pleasin' the crowd. ;D
